If your air conditioner has stopped blowing cold air the way it used to, low refrigerant is one of the most common reasons in Penang.

It is also one of the most misunderstood, so before you book one, it helps to know what is actually going on inside the unit.

What an aircon gas top-up actually is

Refrigerant is the gas that carries heat out of your room. When the level drops, the system can no longer cool effectively, and a top-up replaces what has been lost so the unit works the way it did when it was new.

There are three refrigerants you will come across in Malaysian homes. R32 is what most newer split units use, R410a is common in older units, and R22 is found in very old systems that have now been phased out worldwide for environmental reasons.

Each one is charged differently, so the first thing our technician does is confirm which gas your unit was designed for.

Why a top-up alone is rarely the whole fix

Here is the part most people are never told: refrigerant does not get used up. A sealed system holds its gas for years.

So if your aircon is low, the gas leaked out, and adding more without finding the leak just means you are back to warm air in a few months and paying for gas twice.

Our gas top-up process

We keep the job transparent from start to finish, and most straightforward recharges are done in under an hour.

• Identify the refrigerant: We check the unit’s label and confirm whether it runs on R32 or R410a so we charge it with exactly the right gas. Our R32 vs R410a guide explains why this matters.
• Pressure-test for the leak: Before we add anything, we test the system to find where the gas went. Topping up a leaking system is not a fix.
• Seal the fault and evacuate: We repair the leak point, then vacuum the line where the job calls for it to clear moisture and air that would otherwise damage the compressor.
• Recharge by weight: We charge the system to the manufacturer’s specified weight, not by guesswork, so the unit runs at full efficiency without being over- or under-filled.
• Cooling test: We run the unit and confirm the air is properly cold before packing up, and we show you the result.

How often should you need a gas top-up?

Honestly, not often at all. A healthy, leak-free aircon should never need its gas replaced on a schedule.

If a technician tells you a top-up is just routine maintenance, be cautious, because a unit that genuinely needs gas has a leak that should be found and fixed.

What does pay off in Penang is regular servicing. We recommend a service at least once a year, and twice a year for units in our humid coastal climate, to catch small problems like a weeping joint before they drain the system. If your unit is also struggling with weak airflow or a musty smell, a chemical wash is usually the better starting point than gas.
